Can an older apartment building without a sprinkler system be grandfathered in?

The apartment complex i'm looking at moving into doesn't have sprinkler systems in the apartment. It's an older building and i was wondering if the building was legal. The state is Alabama.

  1. Yes, in Texas smoke detectors are the only thing mandated. Usually it's expensive residential buildings that have sprinklers in it so the owner can protect their investment.
  2. i have no idea
  3. Of course! Typically only new construction has to meet sprinkler codes. It is quite rare—and political suicide—to force current structures to retrofit a sprinkler system.
  4. Yes, buildings built before the sprinkler requirement was put into place are automatically grandfathered into law. The building is legal.
  5. Yep.Need more careful.
