What is the normal (% of profits) commission a residential construction estimator should make per sale?

I recently accepted a job writing construction estimates in the New Orleans residential market and I am only getting paid a % of projected job profits. What is the normal % of job profits that a residential construction estmator/sales person should make?

1. Something sounds shady, this does not seem right. If you get a percentage of the sale, then that is giving you compensation for inflating your numbers. This is unethical behavior in the construction marketplace. You should be getting a flat rate either per Square Foot, building, hours billed or straight salary. A percentage of the sales sounds fishy, and I think you need to take a second look. I am in construction, done a lot of work in estimating for several companies, and never heard of this approach.
